I was a Master onboard a vessel back in late 2008 and living in Belem, northern Brazil, at the mouth of the Amazon River and once arriving the sea buoy at Aracaju I was told that the Pilot was on the buoy. Of course lots of time translation from Portuguese to American English the words are confusing in the translation. Various time I called the Pilot station stating we don't see the Pilot boat and they would reply back no Captain the Pilot is on the buoy waiting for you. Dang! Once we were near the buoy this guys jumps off the buoy with a surfboard and paddles over to over vessel. LoL! On departure once we arrived across the bar and abeam of the buoy the Pilot jumps over the side behind his surfboard...

Summary of what they say: He is 71 years old, works as a "prático" (I do not know the word in English, but he is the person who helps ships get in the port) and instead of giving the directions to the captain to get in the port with the ship, or following a small boat, he just jumps 17 metres (about 51 feet) to the water and swims back to the coast. Sometimes more than 4 hours. Amazing guy. Most captains say they have been all over the World and haven`t seen something like that. This man also designs caravelas and was for a long time captain. His nickname since he was a child is Zé Peixe that means Joey Fish :) He is in the North East of Brazil. in Aracajú.

apparently the brazil rents are so lousy that their pilots are forced to work until the get 100. or port authorities have established a cost-cutting-program eliminating pilot boats. so pay attention at any old man at sea, it is probably a brazil pilot waiting for your ship.
