The US Navy announced yesterday a uniform change authorizing the Chief Petty Officer cutlass as an official (although optional) uniform item.

Navy CPO Cutlass

Designed to be worn by members of an official party during ceremonies requiring officers to wear swords, the chief petty officer (CPO) cutlass has a twenty-six inch stainless steel blade and four laser engraved CPO anchors (CPO, SCPO, MCPO and MCPON) on the base.

This optional uniform item is expected to be available for purchase in August.

The official US Navy press release can be read in it’s entirety here.

Glad to see they are focusing on the important stuff.

The cutlass has been a uniform item for enlisted personnel in charge of a military formation forever. The change is the CPO version and making it optional for all Chiefs. The Officer Sword is also optional for Lieutenants and below.
