I sailed with United States Lines in the mid sixties. We were pioneers in the container industry. They took the Racer class and converted the entire 3 and 4 hatches to comtainers by welding vertical rails down the port center and starboard sections of each hatch. As I remember it was done at Sun Shipyard in Chester PA. There were no cranes in US ports. We used the jumbo boom that could be shifted to 3 or 4 hatch.and a electric hydraulic contraption that hooked up to the top of the container just as today. Many containers were piled 4 high on top of the hatch covers. Many were reefer units. They were secured similar to today with cables and pelican hooks. Some of the officers had made private investments in a fledgling west coast company that was building the containers for this new industry. Me, I was too stupid. One of the 3rd mates who had his mate's license quit and went to work for Sealand. We all told him that they would be out of business in no time and he would come crawling back. Go figure.
