MaK Engines Selected for the U.S.N.S. Howard O. Lorenzen

Caterpillar Marine Power Systems is pleased to announce MaK and Cat® power solutions are featured onboard the U.S.N.S. Howard O. Lorenzen, a T-AGM 25 Missile Range Instrumentation ship. The Lorenzen is powered by 4x MaK 12 M 32 C diesel electric propulsion (DEP) engines, delivering 5.5 megawatts of rated power each. The Lorenzen also has 1x Cat C32 diesel generator set onboard to provide emergency power. In addition to being the largest Cat engines ever installed on a United States governmental vessel, the MaK power solutions are also largest Cat engines ever delivered to any United States government or military branch.

“We are honored to provide propulsion and ship-service power for the Lorenzen vessel and thank the United States Navy for their support,” said Darrell Kuhne, Caterpillar marine program manager for the project. “We are confident the combined Cat solutions will deliver stellar performance while powering the vessel through successful naval missions for years to come.”

Manufactured in Rostock, Germany, the MaK DEP products feature an ultra-clean, HFO capable burning, long-stroke design in addition to a compact generator set design. The design enables customers to achiever longer intervals between service, resulting in lowered overall costs of ownership. Providing unrivalled pickup capabilities, the MaK DEP products also feature low fuel consumption and increased overall efficiency.

“The MaK DEP and Cat offerings utilized on the Lorenzen demonstrate the robust breadth of products Caterpillar can offer customers, including governments around the globe,” noted Kuhne. “In addition to our global Cat dealer network, what really differentiates our offerings is the high degree of customization involved in many of our marine projects.”

Built by VT Halter Marine in Pascagoula, MS, Lorenzen is a 12,575-ton, 534-foot vessel crewed by a blend of government and civilian personnel. The vessel was delivered to the Military Sealift Command and formally accepted by the US government in January 2012. Once fully operational, the vessel will conduct a variety of missions on behalf of the U.S. government.
