Digital Ship Magazine had an excellent article this month about the accuracy of modern GPS units. Apparently the units are getting so good at picking up sat signals that they are picking up very low quality signals that are introducing error.

When I was at US Navy Port Operations in Sasebo Japan in the mid-'90s a MSC T-AO participating in a mine sweeping exercise with JMSDF made the approach to Sasebo through a channel that was not normally used by large ships but was charted clear except for a single islet. The T-AO touched bottom, gashed one of her tanks and subsequently spilled a large quantity of DFM in Sasebo Wan. JMSDF went out later and resurveyed the channel. It turned out the islet was actually the above water portion of an entire underwater ridge between two islands that wasn't on the chart. And Sasebo has been a major naval and commercial port since the late 19th century.
