Would it help if the VTS/Port centre in SF would get an alarm if a vessel is getting too close to a buoy? Say that a system checks the position of the buoys, adds some spacing and compares this position with the position of passing ships?

How about a scenario with more than one ship involved? For example unknown Flag State vessel damages the buoy but buoy remains floating. Then another vessel/vessels wash flloods the damaged buoy under different sea condition. If there is an AIS replay that shows the vessel that did it, then name the Flag State properly and name the vessel. So that IS a prejudical statement under law and CAPT Denham has made them before and I have challanged him, as I will in future. I am not a believer in political correctness or the superiority of one maritime nation's training and professional skills over anothers. Also Mike whether you usually agree with me or not I am not "out of line" there is no writing accuracy "line". I stated a point of view on a preducial statement which I most definitely stand by.

How is that prejudice? Did you see the AIS replay? How many large US-flag container ships call into SF Bay?

I usually agree with you but you're out of line with this one Peter.

Why "by possibly a large foreign-flag container ship".? This is a very inappropriate remark by an experienced mariner. Besides which it is clearly prejudical and made without any supporting evidence. For all CAPT Demham knows "SF" could have been sunk by a large US Naval vessel. It could have been another navigational error on a par with USS "Port Royal" grounding off Honolulu Airport. Perhaps gCAPTAIN should offer editorial guidance to CAPT Denham. Previous inappropriate phrases have occured in some of his other articles. Well trained and skillful seafarers exist outside the United States in many "foreign-flag" Flag States.
